Stephen Banta represents individuals and businesses in civil, commercial and regulatory disputes. Since 2001, he has used a variety of strategies to assist clients facing legal challenges ranging from the relatively simple to the seemingly intractable, including negotiation, compromise, dealmaking and litigation. His experience includes representing both plaintiffs and defendants in a broad range of commercial litigation issues, as well as defense of regulatory actions before the Arizona Registrar of Contractors, defense of criminal actions alleging contracting without a license and defense of regulatory actions brought by the Arizona Department of Financial Institutions. He also has has a broad range of experience in employment law matters, including representation of both employees and employers in unemployment insurance benefit hearings and appeals, unpaid wages disputes, and successful plaintiff’s side presentation and mediation of pregnancy discrimination and retaliation claims before the EEOC.

- Obtained a directed verdict during a jury trial on a $7,000,000 breach of contract claim against his client
- Successfully overturned a judgment of over $3,000,000 against a client in a commercial loan dispute
- Resolved allegations of pregnancy discrimination and retaliation on terms favorable to an employee in EEOC mediation
- Obtained multiple successful unemployment insurance results on behalf of both employees and employers
- Negotiated entry of a stipulated motion to dismiss a lawsuit alleging mortgage fraud brought by the State of Arizona against a mortgage lender
- Successfully obtained compromise and dismissal of fraudulent and preferential transfer claims brought by a Chapter 7 trustee against a religious institution on the grounds that tithe avoidance violates the Religious Freedom Restoration Act
